Oat harvesting in Deans Marsh using steam power. Late
in the 19th century, coaches and wagons were king of the road. Horsepower
was used to drive these early modes of transport. While horses remained
in abundance, oats became a very important subsistence and cash
crop. Chaff was used to feed the horses; straw for bedding and seed
for sowing next year's crop.
